So fun...
Check out this amazing cookie bouquet that Benjamin made for me on my birthday.
He did it nearly completely on his own. (I insisted on taking the cookie sheet out of the oven when they were done. Then I was scooted out of the kitchen!) The kids had a two-hour early release from school that day, so Claire and Benjamin and I each enjoyed a cookie-on-a-stick as an afternoon treat. It was a very special part of my special day.

Prizes!
You remember my quilt, Orion Odyssey? I made it to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Naval aviation. It's part of the Thread Tails and Vapor Trails exhibit that is traveling all around the country this year. In fact, I won an Honorable Mention in the applique category.

Imagine my extreme delight when two boxes of prizes arrived in the mail! Check this out!
A box of 100 fat quarters from Robert Kaufmann's line of Kona cotton basics -- all folded and stacked and packaged in a beautiful box! I'll need to stare at them and stroke them for a bit before I can actually use any of them. Also, 10 one yard pieces from the Ambrosia line designed by Amanda Murphy.
Here's my favorite -- the green and purple floral! I wonder if I could some how stretch one yard into a cute little skirt.
But wait! There's more!
I also received 12 packages of crib size bats from Hobbs. Look, they even have the 100th Anniversary of Naval Aviation logo on the package. I think that's pretty cool!

Thanks so much to Robert Kaufman and Hobbs for supporting art quilting and this exciting event. Thanks also to Kelly Gallagher-Abbott Jukebox Quilts for coordinating the exhibit. It's such an impressive undertaking!
All the winners in addition to several more quilts that will be included in the traveling exhibit are on the Navy Quilts website. They are beautifully presented with great images and full descriptions from the makers about the techniques and stories behind the quilts. You really should take a look. I am honored to be included.

Etsy Shop Updates
I recently listed some small art quilts in my Etsy shop. Here is Blooming Prosperity.
I love the thread tails hanging and the repeated bud shape in the quilting.
Of course... my little Y stitch flowers with beads.
And handwriting details...
This is Branches and Blossoms. It fits the mood of the season here in Maryland where it's only 19 degrees this morning, but we are eager for spring.

French knots trailing over sheer hand dyed fabric.
There are lots of circles in this small quilt.
Lastly, Blue Meditation on Edges. These two quilts were made while I was working in the blue/white/black color palette for 12x12.
Pieces hang off the top and bottom of this piece, giving it a bit of an unusual shape.
More details in the shop.

Zoo!
On Martin Luther King Day we ventured into DC to go to the National Zoo. We were hoping to see the baby lion cubs. Luckily, we arrived just in time. They are only outside from 12:30 to 1 and only if it's warm enough.
There are seven cubs. Three from one mom and four from another. (One dad, of course.) Here
you can see five of the cubs. I believe the other two were hiding in the bushes.
Here are the two mamas. (And cubs in the lower right.)

And here is one mama with a cub jumping on her head.

They were so playful! A delight to watch.

Later we attended the Martin Luther King Celebration at the National Cathedral and dinner at Open City after. I started the meal with a delicious cafe mocha!
There were two animal crackers on my saucer -- luckily they were not lion-shaped, I'm not sure I could have eaten them.

New Work
I started a new quilt. I began by gathering images and doing lots of sketches.
Can you see I wrote "looser" in my notes here? The sketch in the bottom right corner is not loose. The sketch on the bottom left is looser. We'll see how it goes with the fabric.
I don't usually sketch too much before cutting into the fabric, but I try to refine proportions and general composition as a first step.
Last year, when I was working on Spontaneity and Stability for the Beneath the Surface exhibit, I had to start over completely. That was mostly because of a problem with the proportion of the various elements. I'd like to avoid that in the future.
This new quilt will be loosely inspired by our zip line adventure and some of the colors, plants, scenery and mood from our trip to Antigua in summer of 2009.
Today is my birthday. I'm looking forward to some time in the studio! I'll also be volunteering to help third graders in the computer lab at Benjamin's school and going out to dinner with my family wearing my new boots and snappy green sweater dress!

Flash Back
Apparently I set up this post in draft mode back in December. I'm just getting around to uploading it. Anyway, a bit more Christmas cheer for all of us!
We do gingerbread houses every year. I buy the kit from Michaels and it's always fun. One of these years, I should buy one for myself too.
Here is Claire in 2006 (or 2007).

Garden Letters
It's so fun to revisit older art quilts, don't you think? I was delighted to receive a "contributors copy" of Artists' Cafe in the mail a few weeks ago. I thought, "Gee! I don't remember contributing. Hmmmm." I was delighted to find my quilt, Garden Letters, published in the new issue.
Artists' Cafe is a collection of pieces previously published in Somerset Studio. It's really an excellent magazine full of inspiration, variety and ART! I am honored to be included on its pages. You really must find a copy at your local book store.
This little quilt includes many of the same symbols, shapes and techniques that I still use quite regularly in my work. I made it in 2007 and it was published in Somerset Studio in Jan of 2008.
This new publication prompted me to put the quilt up in my Etsy shop and it flew off the shelves the next day! So exciting. It is such an honor to know that someone liked my work and was eager to have it in her home.
I have added a few other art quilts to my shop. I'll post about them later this week, but you can see all the details in the shop.

Abode Aglow
Behold the green and the purple! It's 12x12 reveal day!

Check out our blog to see the rest of the "Eggplant" art quilts, plus read more about my contribution.
It's my turn to pick the next color palette. I'll be announcing it on the 12x12 blog later this week. So exciting.

Mixing
I am finally mixing some art time in to my days! We had a lovely holiday season, during which I spent much more time thinking about art than creating art. So, it's wonderful to get back to the fabric...
...and the paint! I'm painting the edges of my next 12x12 quilt. I didn't have quite the right colors, so I had to mix.

The colorplay palette for this round is "eggplant" or as Nikki described it: eggplant, wine and emerald. We'll reveal the quilts on January 12! (You're getting a bit of a sneak peek in these pictures.)

Last Project of 2010
It was quite nice to wrap up my creative year with this piece.
It was commissioned by a friend of mine in Dallas. She wanted something to hang above her bed and incorporating some of the home dec fabrics she had used in the bedding and interior design of the room. We talked about what elements she especially liked in my work and what themes she wanted to touch on -- home, growth, comfort, family.
I created a contemporary landscape with stacked house shapes and leafy stalks leaning in to shelter the entire piece.
I really enjoyed each part of the process -- the surface design with the handwriting, the hand stitching and choosing the embellishments.
The initial is created with gold foil. I love using denim in my work. I think it sets a tone of comfort. I always felt comfortable in my friend's home, so I am delighted that this piece is a part of it.
I'm always eager to work on small fiber collage and art quilt commissions. You can check out more examples and get a bit more info on the Commissions page on this blog.
