Annual Project

My kids love to decorate gingerbread houses. I buy the pre-packaged kit every year and it's a fun tradition. You can see previous creations here (2008) and here (2007).

The worst part of the process is assembling the walls and roof. You have to mix the icing and pipe all the sections carefully. I usually prop up the walls with cans of soup and jars of peanut butter while they set. The kids always want to "help" and that does not make the process any speedier.

Until this year...

I thought we could try putting the pieces together with hot glue. I mean, we don't eat the house, so why worry about edible elements?

Why why why did I not think of this earlier? It worked great. In fact, it was so fast, we couldn't even get a clear picture of the process!

Awesome! I'm afraid if we did anything sweet/edible for display it would be covered in ants within hours.

While I was at Target getting the Tim Tams that you mentioned I happened to see Gingerbread House kits that have the house already assembled. All you do is decorate the outside. Um... all I could think of was the mobile homes and moduler homes that are restricted in so many places. I wonder if these will someday be restricted as well? I love seeing the things you kids make! Such creative artist you are raising!

How funny -- a few years ago (after I realized that one of Caroline's enduring Christmas memories would be learning new swear words from Mommy while we put together the gingerbread house -- I resorted to the hot glue and it was GREAT. I told that to a friend, who reported that as a kid her dad had built a wooden gingerbread style house -- they'd frost and decorated it every year and the hose it all off after Christmas and use it again year after year! This year, I went for the pre-assembled house. It's all about the decorating, anyway! That's the treat Caroline is saving for when she finishes her exams! I'll look forward to seeing what creative things Benjamin and Claire do!

The hot glue sounds like a great idea. My girls want to do a gingerbread house and I have been hesitant because of the whole putting it together with icing thing. They would never have the patience to let it dry! Thanks for the tip.
