I Said Small

Here are the beginnings of six small works.

Two of these are commissions for twin baby girls. Surely you can guess which two. At least two others will be birthday gifts. (Avert your eyes. You know who you are.) And the others will be added to my pile of completed art. Or be posted for sale on my art blog.

These pieces really echo the collages pieces I did for Maine Street Art. (Like this one and this one.) And my arch pieces. And of course, my love of the grid format. I did use lots of the steps I describe in my book. (That's exactly what they are: small art quilts.)

I neglected to follow some of my usual techniques as I was making these. I used both pre-fused and un-fused fabric. Now I'm not sure how I will adhere the unfused pieces. Stitching, I suppose. After all, I do sew.

I also did not think ahead about how I will finish the edges. Now I have to be careful not to loose any of the composition in what will be the binding. And if I'm going to fold over the front I don't want to mess up the line of the stacked color blocks. This is a challenge if you have an non-square shape. Blasted corners. Even more blasted inside corners! I think I may solve this problem by using a piece of felt as the backing, with a pinked edge that will hang out over the quilt. (And by pinked, I mean the scissors, not the color.) The ones for the babies might have a pink pinked edge.

It's 26 degrees in Dallas today and we're talking about how each of us might finish the sentence, "I have a dream..." And how we might accomplish our dreams and help others accomplish their dreams.

Oh my goodness, our chilliness is spreading south and east. We are supposed to get some moderation, soon. Love your little beginnings.

Can't wait to see the finished quilts. I love the one on the lower left especially.

And the weather around here? I'm ready for it to warm up already!

Ooh I like it - pinked pink quilts. It's like a tongue twister. Can't wait to see them finished!
