More Paint!

Since I already had a bunch of paint and fabric all over the dining room table last week, I spent more time exploring a beautiful set of stencils from Artistcellar. I am just thrilled with the variety of results. I have no idea exactly what I'll do with all this fabric, but it's so nice to know that it's just waiting for me in my stash!

I started with a stencil from their "steampunk" series. I think this series is particularly great for layering. I'll have to go back and add more paint!

Then I tried the Japanese geometric weave in red, orange and yellow on a pale peach fabric.

I dabbed paint through the stencil on the fabric in the foreground, then flipped the stencil over and pressed it onto the fabric in the background. This stencil (and others) could be lined up to create a regular repeating patterns. I liked it a little off-kilter.

Here are both pieces hanging to dry. Two very different effects from just one stencil -- and not wasting any paint. Pretty cool.

Luckily I remembered to have a little tray filled with water on my table. When I was done with a stencil, I just slid it into the water. This made for easy clean up.
I love this dragonfly from their traditional Japanese series.

After I covered the entire fat quarter with green dragonflies, I went back over with a few blue ones. It was easy to just paint through one of the dragonflies even though there are several on the stencil. Lots of possibilities.
The cathedral series is definitely my favorite. Four beautiful corner stencils inspired by rose windows.
Purple seemed appropriately regal for the style of the stencil.

It was easy to match up the stencil and create an entire arch of the design. I pressed excess paint onto the fabric at the right.
I have something in mind for this piece... I think I'll add some silver foiled motifs. Of course, it could be weeks (or even years) before I have a finished piece. But the beginnings of inspiration of certainly here. Plus, I will certainly return to these stencils again for some upcoming projects.

Looks like you are going to have a wonderful stash of printed fabrics. I like that positive and negative weave design and that cathedral series...ooo ahhh! That one might have to come to my house.

I need that steampunk one. My five year old wants a quilt covered with cogs and gears!

It looks like you had a very fun paint-and-stencil play time -- and you created some beautiful pieces! It'll be fun to see where these end up!

Now all that solid fabric looks like something entirely different. Yah!! I now want stencils and a gelli block so I can play along with you

A question-what sort of pen do you use to write on your fabric. I think my 12 by 20 needs writing but I don't want to mess it up with the wrong pen.

I bought the steampunk ones and the cathedral windows ones a while back, but I haven't had time to play with them yet. I've never stenciled onto my fabric before, so I was a little chicken. Thanks for sharing!

Deb, your fabric looks fabulous! I LOVE that you set the weave off kilter! And the tip with the water tray is excellent. GO DEB!
