Crosswords

Jeff and I watched the documentary "Wordplay" a few weeks ago. (We finally broke down and joined Blockbuster online. We chose it over Netflix because you can return the movies to the actual store and get an extra free movie.) Anyway...

It's about Will Shortz, the NY Times crossword puzzle, puzzle maniacs and the annual crossword tournament. (Yes, there is a tournament.) I remember the name Will Shortz from long before he was the NY Times puzzle editor. I subscribed to Games magazine when I was in highschool and his name was everywhere in that publication. The movie is really interesting and I've been inspired to put pencil to paper more regularly with my morning coffee.

I haven't finished one yet. I get close on Mondays and Tuesday and by Thursday I'm not really even trying. (The puzzles get harder throughout the week.) I love that the Times puzzle always has some kind of theme that carries through the whole puzzle. Clever.

When I'm done puttering with the puzzle (my attention span is probably about 5 minutes), I read For Better For Worse, Funky Winkerbean and Zits. Nearly four full pages of comics and I only read three. I miss Fox Trot, though.

I hope you have a --- five letter word for wonderful beginning with G -- day!

I am a crossword puzzle fanatic. Loved the film and love Will's puzzles on NPR Sunday morning. My mother was a big puzzler - guess I inherited it!

Sigh....you have a newspaper with full pages of COMICS?!@!! Sigh....

And my dad did crossords in INK, and rarely had to change. Of course, it was the San Francisco Chronicle, not the NYT, but still.....

I do crosswords and logic puzzles on airplane trips...ab out as much as my attention span can handle when travelling......

Hugs, Sarah

I used the Games magazine in workshops that I facilitated for job readiness and fell in love with that magazine. Will Shorts can be heard every Saturday (or is it Sunday) on our public radio doing the Puzzler Challenges.

Have you seen Word Freak? It is about the International Scrabble Championships games...there is also a book by the same title which I have had for a while but haven't read. I'll add Wordplay to my movie queue. Thanks
