Blog Renew: 7*

Another asterisk. Technically day 7 should have been yesterday, Sunday. I'm going to catch up later today with day 8. As if it really matters, right?

I am thrilled to share with you an art quilt I created for a special exhibit premiering at the International Quilt Festival in Houston called "What's for Dinner." The exhibit is curated by Jamie Fingal and Leslie Tucker Jenison. All the submissions were required to be 24x15" and include a depiction of a place setting.

My quilt "Tabletop Horizons" will be included!

This quilt was tricky to construct. I had this concept of juxtaposed layers of a horizontal landscape. I sketched this idea on my dry erase board.
The numbers denote the different fabrics I intended to use. I had to cut patterns and think carefully about contrast as I created the quilt.

It was especially tedious to get the fork all lined up in three different fabrics!
Here's the artist statement I submitted with my entry.

"The very best conversations with my children happen around the dinner table. We talk to each other. We share thoughts about what’s happening in our world and in our lives. My husband and I try to open their eyes and their hearts to the endless opportunities that lay before them. My place setting represents these wide horizons of possibility. There are winding, growing branches encouraging growth and exploration. The place for a glass also represents the sun rising. I hope my children drink in joy, learning, adventure and love with each new day."

Of course, the quilt includes lots of my favorite elements: hand stitching, hand writing, a painted branch, and the stitched arch over the top.

Are you going to Festival in Houston? I am! I'm really eager to see my work hanging in three different special exhibits.

The way the landscape intersects with the place setting is super! I also like the way that you have interpreted the theme less literally with dinner conversation rather than the dinner itself. Well done!

Love it! Please take pictures of the exhibit; it should be really cool. I don't remember: was this juried?

I love the quilt and your artist's statement is just wonderful - I particularly like the bit about the glass/sun rising.

this makes me so happy, just to study it and see how you put everything together. And then dessert: your artist statement! Just the thing we did with our kids (and something I miss) and what I wish for our grandkids. Missing having you close enough to share a cuppa with, but glad you're settled in your new/old home. Love the new banner too! Good job!
