Blog Renew: 4

I have a confession. Remember I said I needed to find make time to create something without deadlines and requirements? The idea is that would bring about some growth in my personal style. Thank you for all your *excellent* suggestions. Honestly, I appreciate them so very very much.

So, the confession. I am starting a art quilt and I think it will show some growth in my personal style. But, I'm giving myself a deadline, just like I said I wouldn't. I'd like to enter a new work in Art Quilt Elements. That deadline is in less than three weeks. But, for me, it's easy to stagnate without a deadline. And there is something to be said for working quickly and without abandon. (That's not to say that if it doesn't come together, I would stay up all night stitching, fussing and setting myself up for failure. It's just something to aim for.)

I started by creating several thumbnail sketches of potential compositions.

Did you notice? Not a house, stone, chair or plant anywhere to be seen. (Do you have a favorite? I do.)

Another requirement I've placed on this particular project... I want to hang it in our dining room. That narrows my options as far as size, orientation and color. Am I being too restrictive? Or am I giving myself inspiring parameters?

Here's our dining room. We just got a new rug and I really like it. At the moment, the room is very spare, which I also like.

Artists often grumble about creating artwork to "match the couch." I don't know why. I mean really, if I created a long skinny piece in pinks and yellows it would have no place in this room, right? I'm excited about this palette.

I'll keep you posted.

I'd enjoy making something to go with that rug too! I think your parameters are very reasonable. Full steam ahead!

I have found I don't work well without a deadline, I get too distracted. So I have found deadlines are my friend. LOL!

Love the rug!!! It takes the whole room to a different direction, a somewhat unexpected one. It will be really fun to see where you go from there :) Enjoy the journey!

I'll try this again. Guess my other post didn't go through. Your rug reminds me of a paint drop cloth or one I'd use to wipe up my paint spills. This is said in a most positive way as some of my favorite fabrics have been my wiping cloths. The rug is great - can't wait to see what you do from that inspiration.
