Chairs

You may remember that I created twelve 6x6 inch art quilts to share with the other members of the 12x12 group when we were all together in Houston last fall. Here they are -- all lined up.

She Sits to Create #1 - 12

Actually, I see there are only eleven here. I'm not sure if I forgot to take a picture of one or if it just slipped through the cracks.

I chose this design because it's similar to the art quilt I created for the Chair theme in our original 12x12 Theme Series. That's the theme I chose. My quilt for that theme is titled She Sits to Dream.

These were so fun to make. I worked assembly line style. First: create the blocky, linear backgrounds with prefused fabric. Then: fuse the chair to the background. Then: free motion stitch around the edges and contours of the chairs.  Then: machine stitch arched lines across the top. Then: paint the twiggy element using a freezer paper stencil. (I think I had about three different stencils.) Then: add hand embroidery and sequins. Then: trim to 6x6. Finally: stitch around the edges and dab a bit of paint along the edges to finish.

Most importantly, I was delighted to share these bits of original art with the other twelves in celebration of all our work together -- and the friendships we've created.

I may have to do an assembly line of chair quilts. I do love those chairs.

  4. I love mine too (#8). It is framed and hangs above a sweet little bench.
